LAWRENCE — A local man has been charged with the murder of a fellow rooming house resident.

Martin Rodriguez, 61, was arrested by state and Lawrence detectives at the police station Monday afternoon. He is accused of killing José Burgos, 53, at the Lawrence YMCA rooming house, 40 Lawrence St.

The body of the victim, who lived in a single-occupant room on the fourth floor, was found about 8 a.m. Monday by building management after a visiting nurse was unable to make contact with him, according to Stephen O’Connell, spokesman for Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett.

Rodriguez is also a fourth-floor resident of the rooming house, O’Connell said. He declined to say how Burgos died.

The state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death, O’Connell said.

Rodriguez was held without bail pending his arraignment in Lawrence District Court on Tuesday.
